Our Education in Human Values ProgrammeTM
RIS applies Positive Education through our EHVTM
Our Education in Human ValuesTM (EHVTM) programme is aligned with the principles of Positive Education. It builds the foundation of character development and values in students so they become upstanding and compassionate citizens with a commitment to benefit society; develop an appreciation of different cultures; grow to have a deep work ethic and self-discipline; and inculcate grit and a growth mindset – all of which will come to define their true success in life.
An essential part of EHVTM programme is the "mindfulness" practice, which provides children with the tools to help them remain calm and sustain their attention so that they can manage the pressures of student life effectively. RIS has a calm and quiet Mindful Room which is used by each classroom across the week to practice their mindfulness during their school day. Children of different ages learn to pay attention to the present moment through simple breathing practices which increased awareness of thoughts and feelings so as to reduce stress and anxiety and boost levels of attention and concentration. This increased capacity for non-judgmental, present moment awareness has the effect of giving the child choice to respond skillfully rather than to react in a knee-jerk manner to external or internal pressures.
The five core human values of Love, Truth, Peace, Right Conduct and Non-violence are virtues we all ascribe to. While aiming for these virtues, teachers at Regent International School teach the 24 Character Strengths called Values in Action, as displayed here:
